Another great week at the 2026 Annual Convention in Lincoln has come and gone.

Tuesday started off with speed interviews for the 13 Central Community College - Hastings Heavy Equipment Operator Technician Program students and ten of our member companies. Students enjoyed learning more about the work that our members do and are looking forward to locking in their summer jobs / careers.

Jake Thompson led his third and final Master the Build session and 18 of our leaders graduated from the program after a short presentation to our Board of Directors.

At the Board Meeting, our 2026 Board of Directors was approved. You can see that list here.

The evening ended with our Past Presidents' Dinner, sponsored by Paulsen, Inc.. Being able to have current and past leadership in the same room is something special. Tom Crockett and Steve Samuelson were recognized and became Honorary Members.

Wednesday truly kicked off the 2026 Annual Convention. Dave Bauer (ARTBA) and Dusty Vaughan (HBS) joined our Member Meeting to offer insight into our legislative plan for 2026 and 2027. The 2026 Most Likes Social Media Award was given to Luke Lorenz (Judds Brothers Construction) for a video on our Tik Tok that received 26,000 views. We also recognized three CCC-Hastings students who received our scholarship, one who received our two-year technical scholarship and one UNL student who received our scholarship with the Durham School. Lunch ended with an exciting on stage interview with Jaylen Reyes (Nebraska Volleyball Associate Coach).

As the evening crept towards the PAC Auction, our record crowd continued to grow. This year we had a caricature artist and magician for extra entertainment before the auction. The 2026 PAC Auction was another huge success, raising over $105,000. Two years in a row over $100,000 and we aren't slowing down. We are blown away by the support from the PAC Committee, Gene Lilly Surety Bonds, Inc., the item donors, the bidders, the auctioneer, and all who attended. 

Thursday started with a session on AI in Construction, led by Molly Sharp (Workforce Energetics). As breakout sessions and committee meetings started, the next big thing was our Keynote Speaker, Devin Henderson. Kirk Barnes Construction, Inc. was the sponsor who made securing this speaker possible. His "What Else Is Possible?" message about testing the limits and breaking past the restraints of your mind was well-received by all. The day concluded with a Happy Hour surrounding our Associate Expo booths in the atrium.

AGC Nebraska's Future Leaders Council hosted the UNL & UNO AGC Student Chapters for  a unique mix of education and fun during a recent outing that combined an underground tour of Martin Marietta’s Weeping Water Mine with a social afternoon at Smash Park La Vista. The day offered a rare opportunity to see one of Nebraska’s largest limestone operations up close, followed by time to unwind and connect as a group.

Underground at Martin Marietta’s Weeping Water Mine
The event began in Weeping Water, where Martin Marietta operates one of the region’s most impressive underground limestone mines. After a safety briefing and donning protective gear, the group descended into the mine via school bus, which immediately conveyed the scale and engineering behind modern aggregate production.

The mine’s operations offered insight into how vital partnerships between contractors and material suppliers keep the state’s infrastructure strong. By the time everyone emerged back into daylight, there was a collective sense of appreciation for the workers who spend their days underground and for the intricate process that supports every building and roadway above the surface.

Fun and Networking at Smash Park La Vista
After the tour, the group shifted gears at Smash Park La Vista for food, games, friendly competition and relaxed networking. The venue provided something for everyone - pickleball courts, axe-throwing, duckpin bowling, darts, and plenty of space for conversation. The casual setting helped foster meaningful connections among members and students.

A Day to Remember
Combining the Weeping Water Mine tour with an afternoon at Smash Park turned out to be the perfect mix of learning, networking, and fun. The tour gave everyone a better understanding of the materials and people that drive Nebraska’s construction industry, while the social time strengthened the connection between the FLC and the AGC student chapters.

Our Fall Golf Outing at York Country Club was the best way to spend a Friday - perfect weather and great company.

Our Future Leaders Council raised $540 for their Scholarship Fund. A $1,000 Scholarship will be awarded to a student enrolled in Construction Management at UNL and active as a member of the UNL AGC Student Chapter.

Despite the heavy drizzle throughout the day, our group had a great time at Quarry Oaks Golf Club on Thursday, September 25th. The course, food and clubhouse space all made for a top-notch event.

AGC Nebraska Executive Director, Katie Wilson, along with Chapter President, Rob Wemhoff, and Chapter President-elect, Julie Budnick, attended the 2025 Transportation Construction Coalition Fly-In in our Nation’s capital May 6th – 8th. The TCC is a partnership of 34 national associations and labor unions representing hundreds of thousands of individuals with a direct market interest in federal transportation programs.  AGC of America and ARTBA co-chair the TCC. 
Having attended the TCC Fly-in a few years ago, Katie found the support of the industry to be refreshing. Both the House and the Senate goals are to build “Big Beautiful Roads and Bridges”.
The main purpose of the trip was to advocate for the Highway Trust Fund and show support for an improved Surface Transportation Program, which expires on September 30, 2026. 

• On Tuesday, AGC of America provided a legislative briefing to members who attended.  Here are several highlights: 
  • Murphie Barrett, the senior policy advisor for the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee, met with our group to update us on the Committee's plans for reauthorization.
  • The AGC provided insights on President Trump’s Executive Orders. We learned that when an Executive Order is signed by the President, it effectively directs the agency to begin revising the relevant rules or regulations.
  • While Trump aims to reduce regulations, the decrease in staff and resources makes it challenging to implement these changes effectively.
  • The goal is that for every new regulation introduced, ten existing regulations should be eliminated. 
• On Tuesday evening, we joined other AGC chapter executives and members for dinner.  It was great to see our ‘neighbors’ and friends from South Dakota!! 
• On Wednesday morning, we attended the Nebraska breakfast which was held in the basement of the Dirksen Senate office building.  Each of our Federal delegation reported on what they were currently working on. Despite the “Nebraska Breakfast” not having any food, only coffee, it was nice to hear and see them all. 
• We also met with Senator Rickets and his staff.  Senator Ricketts is a member of the Environmental and Public Works Committee which is responsible for the Surface Transportation Program reauthorization.  We discussed the various problems with the current law and what we’d like to see in the 2026 bill. 
• The Transportation Construction Coalition held their session Wednesday afternoon where a number of high-ranking House and Senate representatives spoke on their goals of their respective committees: 
  • Rep. Sam Graves (R-MO), Chair of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, discussed the bipartisan reauthorization package with the goal of having the House pass it by October. He aims to achieve the following: 
    • Create a more traditional package with fewer restrictions, specifically focusing on funding for roads and bridges (the Highway Trust Fund should primarily support roads and bridges rather than all the other programs intended to be funded by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act).
    • Provide states with flexibility in how they allocate the funds.
    • Include Buy America provisions in the bill, aligning with President Trump's goal of bringing manufacturing back to the U.S.
    • Introduce new funding for the Highway Trust Fund through sources such as electric vehicle fees, registration fees, or other sustainable funding mechanisms. 
  • Our final speaker was Senator Shelley Capito (R-WV), who chairs the Environment and Public Works Committee, which oversees the Surface Transportation Program law. It was encouraging to see that the Senate shares the same objectives as the House.  The Senator’s goals are: 
    • There is a Senate portal where Senators are being asked to provide their feedback on what is working well and what they dislike about the current Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA).
    • Providing formula funding to the states and allowing them to decide how to allocate those funds.  For example, Senator Capito mentioned that if a state like California wants to invest in bike paths, it should be able to use their federal funds for that purpose.  States have various needs, so they should have the autonomy to spend their funds accordingly.
    • The desire to fund the program using the Highway Trust Fund (HTF), primarily through user fees.  The current fund doesn’t meet the current programs!
    • Streamlining the environmental permitting process to make it more efficient.
    • The goal of the Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee is to have these initiatives in place by the end of 2025. 
• On Thursday morning, we met with Senator Fischer’s Legislative Assistant and Appropriations Coordinator, Jacob McMeekin.  We reminded him of the EPW’s portal for Senators to provide feedback on the highway reauthorization and expressed our concerns with the current program and what we’d like to see in the next program.  We also updated them on the issues with Project Delivery back in Nebraska.  The Senator wasn’t able to make our meeting, however, we were on the same plane flying home, so we had some quality time with her in the airport.
  

​We will continue to monitor the progress of the House and Senate as they work to draft the next Surface Transportation bill.

Alex Etchen, Vice President of Government Relations at AGC of America, joined our Member Meeting and Lunch to give a run down of what we can expect from the new administration in D.C.. We recognized Tyler Chicoine, Garcia-Chicoine Enterprises, Inc., with the V.C.S. Award for his vision, commitment and service to our industry. Our Honorary Members list grew by three, with the additions of Peggy Shalla (All Road Barricades, Inc.), Terry Rogers (Martin Marietta), and Jay Johnson (Martin Marietta). The 2025 Most Likes Social Media Award was given to Aaron Hansen (Dustrol, Inc.) for a video on our Tik Tok that received 38,000 views. We also recognized two of the three CCC-Hastings students who received our scholarship, and one UNL student who received our scholarship.

As the evening crept towards the PAC Auction, our record crowd continued to grow. This year, we added a silent auction and loaded cooler raffle to our Live PAC Auction schedule. All three went over very well. The 2025 PAC Auction was a huge success, raising over $108,000 and cursing the previous record by $30,000. We are blown away by the support from the PAC Committee, Gene Lilly Surety Bonds, Inc., the item donors, the bidders, the auctioneers (Purple Wave Auction), and all who attended.
