NDOT News Release: Updates Made to the U.S Highway 6 Project Schedule in Hastings

June 1, 2018 (Lincoln, Neb.) — The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) determined construction on
its Hastings Southeast Project – a reconstruction of a 2.5-mile segment of U.S. Highway 6 through the city – will not
begin in 2019.

The determination was made after evaluating the transportation system needs of the entire state and balancing the
increased cost estimate for this project with funding availability.  The evaluation process is a constant one, and it
often results in the shifting of funds and timelines as required by statewide system priorities and needs.

Right of way acquisition efforts will continue during 2019, but a construction schedule for the project has not been
established.

As currently designed, the project plans call for highway capacity to increase from one to two lanes in each
direction.  Improvements also will include intersection work, new lighting, sidewalks and a modern storm sewer.

Despite construction not beginning in 2019, project development and related activities are ongoing. Discussions
between NDOT and local officials about the detour route and its readiness continue, as well as planning for traffic
maintenance and business access during the project.

The project will be funded primarily by the state, with eighty percent of the $35 million project coming from state
funds, with the City of Hastings providing the additional 20 percent of funding.

NDOT is committed to keeping the public informed on the Hastings Southeast Project.  Project details for the
Hastings Southeast project have not changed since the public meeting in 2016 and updates on the project can be
viewed at on the NDOT website at dot.nebraska.gov.
